Phillip Shockley's Obituary
Phillip M. Shockley was born on April 26, 1953 in West Virginia to the late Zona Shockley-
Hampton and Clifford Shockley Sr. Phillip was proceeded in death by his wife Shirley Shockley, mother Zona-Hampton, step-father Albert Hampton, father Clifford Shockley Sr. and sister Dianne Shockley. Phillip was called home on March 4th, 2024 at Carewell Hospital in East Orange, NJ. Phil began his education at Montgomery Street School in Newark, NJ. After Montgomery, he attended Southside High School where he played on the Southside basketball team. He made the All- City and All-state basketball team. He played for a professional team called the Harlem Diplomats. Shortly after playing pro-ball, Phil worked as a security guard for the city of Newark. He wanted to further his career so he became a supervisor for the Sanitation Department in the City of Newark for many years until sickness struck and he had to retire.
Anyone who knew Phil, knew he loved basketball, but not as much as he loved football. His
favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys. Most of all Phil loved his family, especially his Mother Zona. He was unanimously credited for bringing the Shockley-Beatty family together which resulted in the famous Family Reunions. Phil leaves not to mourn but cherish his memories: two Daughters: Makeisha- Shawn (Shakil) and Tiffany. Grandchildren: Makayla, Myiah, Kaden, Kaleb, and Khalil whom they loving called “Papi”. Siblings: Karen (Butch-deceased), Clifford, Leonard (Connie), Greg (Sheila), and Louis. Nieces: Ishea, Vanessa, Chrissy, Zona, Turquoise, Precious, Briya and Alana, and Nephews: Kariem, David, Gregory and Brian. He had a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a special friend Barbara Ginlock.
